PRIVATE HOUSE IN MALIBU

The city of Malibu is set between Ventura and Los Angeles counties along the west coast of California. It is a place of undisturbed steep mountainous valleys which extend toward the scenic coastal beaches. The subject of the scheme is the steep rural hillside and the panoramic mountain views obtained from the site. The original house, after having been destroyed by the 2007 Corral Canyon wildfire, has been replaced using the same basic footprint. The house sits with its highest half-story loft at the topside of the hill, while the remaining volumes step down in response to the steep topography. From the outset, the aim of the intervention was to preserve the Spanish architectural vernacular founded by the original missionary settlements of California.  Bedrooms, and living spaces look out across the open montain ranges, and herein become extensions of the environment. Carefully detailed floors make for a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors, while full height picture windows bring the views into the spaces.
